Learn the easy steps you need to replace an empty toner in your copier or printer.

Adding toner to a photocopier

Initial Steps

  1. Understand what type of printer you have, is it a Laser or Inkjet? <<find out here>>
  2. Do not fit a new toner unless the machine display is requesting it.
  3. Make sure the new toner is correct for the machine, before opening it!
  4. Colour machines use Black (K) and blue called Cyan ( C) , a dark pinkish red called Magenta (M) and Yellow (Y)
  5. Give the new toner bottle a good shake to agitate and loosen the toner inside

Removing the old toner bottle or cartridge

  1. There is no need to turn off the machine
  2. Open the door covering the toner
  3. To remove the old toner there is often a latch release, bottles need rotating to an unlock position before withdrawing. Look out for stickers or labels inside to guide you.
  4. Some printers use a ‘combination’ cartridge that combines the toner supply with an image processing roller. These cartridges are bulkier and may need assertive pulling to unclick them and remove. Look for labels or coloured areas indicating where to hold/pull.

Installing the new toner

Shake the new cartridge 6-10 times to agitate and loosen any settling of the toner.

Remove any packaging tapes, seals or protective film, these will be clearly marked. You will not be the first person to try to install a new toner without first removing the transit seals, but try not to be the next one!

The replacement toner supply will need fitting in the reverse order to the sequence you used to remove the old one. Latching in place or turning to lock.

Restore the cover or door. It it doesn’t close easily, then the cartridge isn’t full implace, remove and retry the insertion.

Your machine should re-set and indicate toner level at 100%

Do’s and Don’t

Tools are never needed.

Extreme force isn’t needed. You might be doing something wrong if it doesn’t go in easily.

Dispose of the old unit responsibly
